  • Divide Road To The Summit - #DivideRoadToTheSummit

Socal - Los Angeles County - Avalon, Catalina Island NickNames: #DivideRoadToTheSummit east end-renton mine-divide road

East End Ride - The Catalina Island Conservancy opened the East end of the Island (Renton Mine Road-Divide Road to the Summit) in October 2004. This new area now provides two major routes out of Avalon.

One ride on pavement towards the airport and Two Harbors (formerly the only legal MTB ride out of Avalon) and the new East End/Divide Road to Summit Route that goes around the entire ridgeline from the east end of Avalon Canyon to the West end of Avalon Canyon (ending on the top of the steep paved road).

PLEASE NOTE: ALL MOUNTAIN BIKERS MUST GET A PERMIT FROM THE CATALINA ISLAND CONSERVANCY BEFORE ENTERING THE INTERIOR OF THE ISLAND.

    • East End-Divide Road To Summit-The East End Ride can be accessed from the paved Mt Ada Rd. from Pebbly Beach east of Avalon. The initial dirt section leads to Renton Mine, stay right at the intersection of Renton Mine Rd and East End Divide Road. This is about the half-way point of the first major climb. Follow the road to the top of the climb (East Peak +-1,600 feet ele.), continue along the ridge line and take in the spectacular views of the channel (and mainland) and the Pacific Ocean, out to San Clemente Island. The ride is now downhill until the intersection of Wrigley Memorial Gardens Road (no bikes are currently allowed on this road but that may change soon!). From this intersection to the paved road (Summit Road) is a pretty good climb for about 20 minutes. Once you reach the paved road you can either go left towards the Airport and the west end of the island or right down the paved road back to Avalon. Be sure to check with the Conservancy before you take any ride, our record rains this winter have affected many of the roads on the island.
